What Does Love Require of Me?

Take Comfort. We’re All Clueless

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as my days as a husband and father pass by, it’s that I’m continuously realizing how little I know.

There are times when I feel like I got it licked.

Each child gazes warmly at me with a smile that says, “I love you Papa.”

My wife laughs at my jokes and loves my grilling skills.

Even I am pretty pleased with myself.

As you and I know, relationships are not always that easy.  As a friend of mine tells me when things are going poorly: “This too shall pass.”  He says the same thing when things are going particularly well.

There are other times when I don’t know what buttons to push or which levers to pull. For anybody. Even I can’t figure out myself.

No matter what I say to whom, my words are flat and meaningless. Or just plain not helpful.

At those moments, those battles against cluelessness, I’m at a loss.

Do you ever have those moments?

Do you ever feel like your best intentions are just dumb and you’re saying words but you might as well be the only person in the world that speaks the language you speak?

I’m going to take a stab and assume that you, too, occasionally feel like your every effort is just a little bit (or a lot off).

Or you’re playing a game of Whack-a-Mole. You seem to have one situation in good standing and then another issue pops up.

What I’m trying to learn in these situations where my efforts to solve everyone’s problems are fully ineffective…. what I’m trying to learn…..

Is to ask this question:

What does love require of me?

That’s it.

What does love require of me?

It probably is not to come back around the situation with a new idea or new solution. It’s probably not to keep talking and talking and talking. I can do that when things are uncomfortable. How about you?

What does love require of me?

What does love require of you?

What does being loving to this other person – this child, this parent, this spouse, or yourself – mean in this very moment?

Just ask the question and learn to listen for the answer.
