Starting Well – An Invitation and a Challenge

We all know that making change is much easier in community.

Anonymous groups are built on the idea that it takes a community surrounding each individual for consistent change to take hold. One man vs. a bottle results in frustration or worse. One man + a group of fellow strugglers clawing after the same goal results in change.

Success literature is rife with references to mastermind groups and statements about how we can tell how effective a person is by looking at the 5 people she spends most of her time around.

With this in mind, I’d like to invite you to join me in starting 2014 well.

Starting on January 2, I’ll be kicking off the Starting Well Challenge.

If you’re a planner, you might have already come up with some goals or resolutions for the upcoming year.  I’m still inviting you to join us. While many of us are great at writing out our goals and plans, we struggle with implementation.

The Starting Well Challenge will provide a 14 day process for developing your playbook for 2014. This playbook will have a list of your primary goals (along with a few in the queue in case you knock it out of the park) and a simple plan for implementing the change.

Here are the main elements in the process:

  1. A quick review of 2013, reflecting on successes and perceived (or actual) failures.
  2. Goal and outcome envisioning: What do you want to see happen in your world?
  3. Identifying your key roles and selecting the top outcomes for each.
  4. Installing habits and practices to support those goals.
  5. Creating a culture of support to give yourself the best chance to win.

How will the Starting Well Challenge be delivered?

I’ll be posting each of the 14 days on this blog starting on January 2, 2014. I’m also providing a signup form for you to receive the content directly into your inbox.

Who will be participating?

Whoever wants to! If it’s just one other person and I, I’m going to plow through the process. I’ll end each post with an opportunity to share your responses to the day’s content. Depending on the response, we might set up a Facebook group to bounce ideas around and share how each of us are engaging the process.

What is the basis for the content?

Admittedly, I’ve overdosed on productivity, leadership, and personal growth books and podcasts and whatnot over the last few years. My role is less expert and more curator. Since I’ve consumed so much content and been able to see some fruit based on the info, I’ve decided to offer it out to you. If it helps someone, awesome!

Personally, any engagement in this type of process is preceded by my faith as a Christian. Plans are wise. Goals are good. But it’s not an exercise of gaining more control. It’s about identifying God’s heart as best as we can and building practices into our lives that will help us be as faithful as possible.

He, in my mind, holds all the cards. We are to be good stewards. This Starting Well Challenge is simply an effort to be a better steward.

So are you in?

If you sense that this is something you would like to join in on, sign up in the form over to the right or below.

Let’s help each other start the year off well. Let’s not resolve to do stuff. Let’s do some stuff. Simply sign up in the form below and you’ll get a couple preview and warm-up emails before the Challenge starts in earnest on January 2.

I’ll lay some more groundwork over the next couple days, so stay tuned!

Full disclosure: One of my goals for 2014 was to develop just this type of program. I’d love you to be a part of the journey.
