If you believe me…that we are stewards and not owners of everything in our worlds…then one of the things over which you are a steward is yourself.
Stewarding yourself might be the most difficult part of being a steward.
We can treat ourselves poorly. We can handle our health – physical, mental, and spiritual health – with disregard and lack of care.
Yet how can we steward others or have the mindset of one who cares for other things if we don’t take extra special care to steward our own lives well.
For lack of a better metaphor, consider the whole oxygen mask in the plane idea.
You put your own on first before helping someone else.
The Two Parts of Self-Stewardship
The first part is to take care of ourselves. This part involves having daily disciplines and doing things that are healthy and encouraging and that bring joy.
The second part is to discipline ourselves. This part involves being honest with ourselves. This usually involves some measure of taking responsibility for our own situations on some level and giving ourselves some tough love as to what we need to grow.
Just think about it over the next few days….
- What do you need to do to care for yourself?
- Where do you need to be brutally honest with yourself?
With those two questions you and I will be well on our way to being responsible stewards of our own dang selves.
